Review RoundUP November 3 2012

With Windows Phone 7, we saw Microsoft make a clean break from Windows Mobile and begin to morph the mobile experience from something tailored largely for users wanting a smartphone that emulated the Windows experience as much as possible on a smaller screen to a mobile-driven UI with a completely ground-up look at what needs to be part of a smartphone OS. WP7 was a radical re-imagining of Microsoft’s mobile story at a point in the smartphone explosion where it wasn’t very clear who would emerge victorious and who would fizzle out.

For most of these tests, our primary testbed was a custom-built gaming PC with a 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 960 CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 GPU, 12GB of DDR3 RAM, and a Crucial M4 solid-state drive—not quite state-of-the art, but a high-end system from a couple of years back. We’ve also widened our sample size with several other test systems, as seen in the table below. Nota bene: The bottom two systems were used solely to run gaming benchmarks.

The design of the Vivo Tab RT is very similar to about every other tablet on the market today. It feels very comfortable in hand as it measures 10.4 x 6.7 x 0.4-inches (whd) and weighs 1.18-pounds, so it’s very lightweight. In comparison with the Microsoft Surface, it’s a tad smaller and significantly lighter too.

“And the next technology journalist that asks you whether you want fonts that small, I’ll just hunt down and give an atomic wedgie. I want pixels for high-quality fonts, and yes, I want my fonts small, but ‘high resolution’ really doesn’t equate ‘small fonts,’” he added, noting also that high-res fonts help those with poor eyesight read more easily.

Rattner said functions such as speech recognition and augmented reality will push the need for more computational power.
